Neha Madhira, Editor-In-Chief

Neha Madhira is a senior and Editor-in-Chief of Prosper High School's newspaper, Eagle Nation Online. She was accidentally moved into Journalism I as a sophomore but her teacher's passion for writing made her fall in love with it. Madhira has won over 24 journalism awards over the last three years, including the first Women's Media Center Young Journalists award and a National Quill and Scroll Gold Key. She also recently gave a TED talk along with Assistant Editor Haley Stack over the effects of prior review and censorship. Madhira now works with First Amendment advocates like Mary Beth Tinker and Mike Hiestand in hopes to have the New Voices legislation pass in Texas as well as the other 35 states that don't have the law.

A case of measles has been reported at the Kroger on North Preston Road. A man, who is remaining anonymous, is said to have shopped for a “limited amount of time” from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on March 15. Kroger employees are urging concerned patrons who were shopping around that time to consult their doctor.

Senior ENO editor-in-chief Neha Madhira takes on the topic of student press law by posing for the photo here and by authoring the attached editorial. Senator Jose Rodriguez filed S.B. No. 514 Jan. 29, 2019, in the Texas State Senate. This proposed piece of legislation has the support of the New Voices movement in Texas and is meant to protect students from being censored. This free press law has been passed in 14 other states. Allowing students to express their beliefs without suppressing them not only makes students better critical thinkers, but this freedom also brings in those “real-world situations” they are taught to learn from, Madhira said. Without this freedom, students have no voice, and without New Voices, there is silence.

Senior Jackson Lundquest spends his time participating in organizations such as French Club, Book Club, various honor societies and student council. Through his high school career, Lundquest said he learned to realize his coming-out experience has been unique. “After the fact, it was kind of the ‘business as usual’ which I am so grateful for,” Lundquest said. “I know that is the rarest thing in the world, especially in this political climate. I feel like people think all gays are the same when they aren’t.

Now the ladies are in play-offs, and the play-off privileges have included No-shave November privileges for the guys in honor of the football team making the play-offs. Now, the girls are allowed to wear pajama pants as their play-off privileges in honor of the success of the girls athletic programs. The varsity volleyball team plays Klein in the regional semi-finals Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in Sam Houston State Universitys Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville. Tickets will be $6. The regional finals will be Saturday at 1 p.m.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention provides informatiom for those who want to keep their friends and family safe. Today the ‘Talk Saves Lives’ presentation on warning signs and risk factors for suicide will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. AFSP North Texas Board Member Wendy Tyler will speak at todays event. “So many people are unaware of how prevalent suicide and attempts are with our teenagers,” Tyler said. “In the United States, it is estimated between 100 and 200 teenagers attempt for every one suicide death that occurs. It’s not more common in low-income areas than in high-income areas. It is across the board.” People can visit the AFSP website for more information.
