The Golden Globes used to be a distinguished and reputable awards ceremony that recognized the excellence of film and cinema. However, in early 2021, the reputation of the Golden Globes collapsed due to allegations of scandals, corruption, etc., according to Business Insider. Due to inadequate racial diversity, celebrities, including Scarlett Johansson and Tom Cruise, spoke out to call for change. In addition, the Golden Globes’ main broadcaster NBC announced they would terminate any further streaming of the ceremony. As a result, the show lost a lot of viewership. Although it is finally back, the general public is still skeptical.

Celebrities and cinema

The Golden Globes recognizes actors, movies and TV shows. Countless actors have been awarded the Golden Globes, like Leonardo DiCaprio who won three times. Even more impressive, Tom Hanks has won this award on eight separate occasions. However, these awards also recognize films. Famous movies like “Oppenheimer“, “Gladiator” and “The Godfather” achieved excellence in the best drama motion picture category, while others like “The Descendants” and “Annie Hall” excelled in the best music and comedy motion picture categories. Furthermore, the Golden Globes recognizes several TV shows, including “The X-Files“, “L.A. Law” and “The Crown.”

Golden Globes vs. the Oscars

There are significant differences between the Oscar awards and the Golden Globes awards. The Oscars are an official, formal ceremony to appreciate the work of actors and directors. However, the Golden Globes is more of a party, where celebrities enjoy themselves casually. In fact, Golden Globes hosts are known for teasing celebrities in the audience. An important difference to note is the Oscars only recognizes people while the Golden Globes also recognizes movies and shows. Besides the obvious different origins of the the Oscars and Golden Globes, the most prominent difference between them is their credibility. People in the industry place more value on the Oscars as it has fared better in terms of reputation.

Recent nominees

This year, the Golden Globes has listed many nominees to potentially win awards in their respective categories. Some movies include “Frankenstein“, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle” and “Sirāt“. Some actors that have been nominated are Jennifer Lawrence, Dwayne Johnson, Cynthia Erivo and Timothée Chalamet. The winners for this year’s awards will be announced this Sunday, Jan. 11, airing on CBS and Paramount+.
