In this episode, the team discusses the history of Earth Day, held on April 22. Started in 1970, Earth Day began as a way to educate students about the planet.

“History’s Forgotten” is a podcast started by junior Christi Norris, senior Maddie Moats, and senior Caroline Wilburn in October 2020. The podcast covers a number of diverse individuals and events that history forgot.  Through the History’s Forgotten podcasts, its hosts hope to enlighten and inform themselves and others in a fun, light-hearted way.

In this episode, seniors Emma Hutchinson, Caroline Wilburn and junior Christi Norris discuss the history of Earth Day. Started in 1970, Earth Day began as a way to educate students about the planet. Senator Gaylord Nelson with help from young activist Denis Hayes started the movement. Earth Day began as an educational movement and has continued as it’s grown to a larger more public event. The event has led to several laws being passed to protect the environment and is now celebrated in 193 countries.

This week, Earth Day takes place, as Prosper mother Tracey George waters her plants in her garden. Georges goal is to create a sustainable garden of native plants, with the ultimate aim of helping local wildlife thrive. My mom is always outside gardening or thinking about what she can add to the garden to attract bees, Georges daughter and sophomore Kalyani Rao said. A tin can rests abandoned alongside a railroad track in Mckinney. The area holds garbage, including plastics and metals, scattered across it for lengths almost as long as a mile. According to the Balance smb, many day-to-day items can take a long time to decompose. For example, metals like those in a tin can can take 50 years to decompose. Aluminum can take up to 500 years, and plastics can take up to twice that amount of time - 1,000 years. “It upsets me, junior photojournalist Brian Bock said. Knowing the fact that some of the things humans use the most abundantly and frequently, are the same things that are destroying our planets environment the most.
