HOSA collected 74 pints of blood through Carter Blood Care on Thursday, March 5. In total, the two drives — including this one and the one on Nov. 13 — were able to collect 161 pints of blood this year from Prosper HS, saving 483 lives.
“Our students really enjoy this day and it’s probably my favorite day of the year,” HOSA sponsor, pharmacology teacher Kelli Factor said. “I get to meet new students that I haven’t met before, we get to work as a team and show off our skills and we overall have a great time.”
Although only 47 students signed up by Wednesday, there were 100 participants the morning of, including walk-ins.
“I think that giving blood is a great way for students to give back to their community,” sophomore Campbell Caufield said. “It’s a nice experience and builds character.”
For preparation, the event is scheduled a year prior through Carter Blood Center and is approved by administration.
“What stood out to me about the blood drive was the impact that the people donating would have on others,” senior, HOSA member Gabriela Gonzalez said. “All the blood that is donated is later given to people in need. ”
Sign ups took place during lunches for participants 16 and older, the participants later received an email with details and instructions.
“I think it’s awesome for people who want to give back in that way and save people’s lives,” Principal Paige Turjillo said. “It’s incredible.”
HOSA students managed the event while Carter staff drew blood and took care of students.
“The way students come together for a good cause is one of my favorite parts of the blood drive,” Moreta said. “It is extremely rewarding, no matter how stressful it may get.”
