Following this year’s Golden Globes Awards Ceremony, several movies and shows have been recognized for their excellence. There are many winners, each in different categories.
Best Motion Picture – Drama
The winner for this category is Hamnet. Runners-up include Frankenstein, Sentimental Value and Sinners.
Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
One Battle After Another won this category, overcoming other pictures like Marty Supreme, Nouvelle Vague, and Bugonia. Many critics believed that One Battle After another was very dramatic, so it should have competed in the drama category instead, giving way for a different movie in the musical or comedy section.
Best Motion Picture – Animated
In this category, the winner was KPop Demon Hunters, reigning over movies like Arco, Zootopia 2 and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle. This was a controversial pick among enjoyers of these shows, many believing that the Demon Slayer movie way exceeded KPop Demon Hunters.
Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language
The victor of this category is The Secret Agent, surpassing films like The Voice of Hind Rajab, Sirāt, and It Was Just an Accident. Even though there was tough competition in this category, viewers largely accepted The Secret Agent to have won.
Best Podcast
In this category, Good Hang with Amy Poehler emerged as the winner, exceeding The Mel Robbins Podcast, Smartless, and Up First. Podcast enjoyers that followed the Golden Globes were content with the Good Hang winning, as they felt it was well-deserved. They also believed that the brand new addition of the podcast category allowed for more diversity and representation among “normies” as the Golden Globes have historically involved famous and wealthy celebrities. However, critics invalidate the addition of the podcast section because they believe that it takes away from the etiquette of the program because of the informal interview format of podcasts.
Along with cinemas, the Golden Globes also award actors, directors and other involved individuals who have excelled in their talents in the past year. Like the movies, these people are also separated into brackets.
Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
Jessie Buckley in Hamnet won in this category, surpassing other stars like Julia Roberts, Tessa Thompson and Jennifer Lawrence. Many fans thought that she deserved this award, with minimal critiques.
Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
This was awarded to Wagner Moura from The Secret Agent, with other close nominees including Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan and Oscar Isaac. Many were happy with the results as Moura was a competitor in the awards ceremony last year.
Best Director – Motion Picture
This award goes to Paul Thomas Anderson in One Battle After Another, outmatching Ryan Coogler, Jafar Panahi and Chloé Zhao. Film critics felt that this year’s nominations and ultimate results were fair. However, back in 2018, controversy spread as a result of the lack of female directors in this category, making critics question the diversity of the Golden Globes.
Best Original Score – Motion Picture
The winner of this category goes to Ludwig Göransson in Sinners, with runners-up other famous producers like Hans Zimmer, Jonny Greenwood and Max Richter. Although the Göransson was praised for his composition, the Golden Globes received heavy backlash due to the fact that they did not include Göransson’s speech in the live broadcast, enraging fans. Even Zimmer spoke out about the topic, calling it “ignorant.”
