Engineering’s solar-powered cars race to learn

Winning the competition, sophomores Gakou Kairu and Jonathan Droege beat their other competitors in the solar-powered car race to the cafeteria. The race was held Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 so that all of the engineering students had the opportunity to compete. "I've definitely learned a lot about electrical circuits, gears, power sources and voltage," Droege said. "I decided to take the class because I like building things, and I do plan on going into the engineering field."

After creating their own solar-powered cars, the engineering science class competed in a race down the main hallway on Nov. 2 and 3. The students were split into groups, and each group designed and built a model solar-powered car. The competition lasted 30 minutes, split into 10 minutes of ‘daylight’ where students could use the lights to move their cars, 10 minutes of ‘night’ where the students could only use stored energy to push the cars and ten more minutes of ‘daylight.’
