With Prosper High School’s homecoming dance approaching on Sept. 26, the race to find the perfect dress is on its final stretch. While most students head straight for malls packed with the best branded dresses, others run toward the chic and, sometimes better, affordable dresses hanging on the racks of a local thrift store. With the goal of securing the perfect homecoming dress, we went to a total of four thrift stores/small businesses in and around Prosper and took notes on each one.
Goodwill: 4/10
We felt this place had lots of options to browse, while not all of them are following recent trends, this shop is perfect for any imaginative students. While the dresses they had were limited, there were multiple different accessories, we felt could help elevate any HOCO dress styles. The selection of handbags and heels were incomparable. Overall, this store would not be our main option for finding a dress, but rather a option to buy any extra accessories to help make the day extra special. An extra bonus is the amount of vintage collections they have.
Cornerstone: 6/10
Although this store had more homecoming style dresses, the prices weren’t as friendly as other places. Cornerstone offered a variety of different dresses and different accessories to use on the big day. With short and long dresses, Cornerstone has a dress for everyone. While going through the store, we saw variety collection of shoes, with classics like nude heels and more fancy stoned shoes. Overall, this store would be perfect for anyone with a more flexible budget.
Black Willow Boutique: 3/10
This store was mostly centered around formal, basic dresses that would’ve been perfect for at-home events; however, they weren’t very well suited for occasions like homecoming. Even the few dresses that could have been used as party wear were pretty highly priced, with prices hovering around the $60- $70 range. The store itself, however, was beautiful, with a nice interior and customer-friendly shopping zones. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this boutique for homecoming, but it would be a wonderful fit for smaller occasions.
Uptown Cheapskate: 10/10
This local thrift store in Frisco had all the criteria we were looking for when it comes to finding chic and affordable dresses. They had a wide range of homecoming selections from sequins, to glitter, to satin dresses, the store offered it all. In addition to variety, the store was ahead of the game in prices as well, with dresses ranging from $10-$20. Based on my personal experience with wearing one of their dresses to my junior year homecoming, I can say that Uptown Cheapskate is definitely the place to go when looking for quality and affordability.
