“Flint and steel!”
“Chicken jockey!”
“I am Steve.”
Clips from trailers for “A Minecraft Movie,” which was released on April 4, featuring these lines and others, went viral on social media platforms before the movie’s release, creating a lot of hype around the movie. The movie is based on “Minecraft,” a 2009 sandbox video game that has become the highest-selling game ever. The movie received varied reactions, with fans enjoying the film and critics scoring it low.
The plot of “A Minecraft Movie” was incredibly predictable and felt like something I’ve seen in thousands of other movies. Every “twist” could be expected beforehand. The actors also weren’t super believable, so that took away from enjoying the plot.
The graphics in the movie actually looked faithful to the original game. When I first saw the trailer and saw the movie would be mixed CGI and live-action, I thought it was a terrible decision. I thought it would look cheap and detract from the attempt to look like the characters were in Minecraft. However, the movie was visually pleasing.
My favorite part of the movie is how unserious it is. Although the acting isn’t super convincing, the actors were clearly having a lot of fun with the movie. This allowed the viewers to have much more fun watching the movie. Because the plot was predictable, viewers are able to relax and focus more on the jokes and comedic moments, which were actually quite funny.
Although the movie itself wasn’t great, my experience watching it has been one of my favorites of any movie I’ve seen recently. Most of the people seeing the movie in my theater were fans of the original game, and they played into the hype and jokes around the movie. Everyone was laughing the whole time. Overall, the movie is just a fun, enjoyable watch.
