‘Relay for Life’ raises money to cure cancer

Student Council hosts annual fundraising event

In front of the lower house, a Relay for Life sign, made by the student council, promotes the event. The event will be hosted to raise money against cancer. The fundraiser will be on the PHS Turf and Track, on April 12 from 6 – 10 p.m.

Cancer-awareness cover - past & present
Filled with signatures, a banner is displayed in Jaxson Littles hospital room. The banner includes the hashtag #littlestrong which became used by members around Prosper to show their support for Jaxson through social media. Jaxson is number five on Prospers junior varsity basketball team.
Sophomore fights cancer with support of community
At his desk, long-term substitute Gary Spurgeon works on his computer. PISD hired Spurgeon to substitute for English IV for around three months. In the attached article, Spurgeon shares his story overcoming cancer and returning to his job as a teacher.
Long-term substitute teacher overcomes throat cancer to teach

When I heard the word cancer – in the same sentence with my name – it stops you in your tracks, Krempin said. And, you start immediately thinking. You start realizing what really becomes important. It made me realize that I need to spend more time with my kids. I needed to spend more time with my friends and family. They needed to know how grateful I was for them and how much I love them. Breast cancer survivors hope to 'be a light,' inspire others with their stories
Survivor Sandra Johnson looks out a window as she talks about her battle with breast cancer. In the attached column, Johnsons granddaughter shares her feelings on the diagnosis. I just froze, I sobbed a few tears, and then I faced it.

Relay for Life will be held at the PHS Turf and Track this Friday, April 12, from 6 to 10 p.m. Entry will be free, and the invite is extended to everyone who wishes. To participate in the carnival games at the booths and purchase food, you will need to pay for tickets.

Relay for Life is an event to raise money to put an end to cancer. Survivors are honored and money is raised through donations and running laps around the track.

If you are in an organization or club, please arrive by 5 p.m. to ensure your club has enough time to set up. If you think you will need longer than that, your club is welcome to come sooner.

If you’re not a PHS club, you can bring your tent when your club arrives at the actual event if this is easier for you (limit your amount of trips to PHS). Everyone will be meeting at the PHS track, as the event is being held there.

Relay for Life’s Prosper High School group currently has a goal of $10,000. They currently have $3,940.76 raised.  Click here to donate

News Brief: End-of-year senior information, dates and more
After golf regionals, sophomore Erica Lee, junior Kendall Simms, freshman Tatum Churchman, freshman London Pearson and junior Sophia Duque present their scores. The team finished fifth and were district champions. Churchman led with a score of 71.
Eagle Brief: April 22 – 28
Running toward the ball, sophomore Ava Germany dribbles past her opponent. It felt great to make it to state, Germany said. The games leading up were all games that had people biting their nails. It came down to the last minute in every playoff game it felt like. I think the biggest challenge our team faced during state was confidence. Everyone believed in us to win we just had to believe in ourselves and even with the result we got I believe we could have been more confident.
Eagle Brief: April 15 – 21
Displayed on a white board is the goals written by members of the Mayors Youth Advisory Council. The committee meets monthly to share ideas with Mayor Bristol. During meetings, updates are shared by the mayor, and the students discuss hot topics to resolve youth relates issues.
Prosper ISD students advise mayor
In a circle, GT American Studies students look at the half-eclipsed sun as they lie on the practice turf. Teachers passed out protective eclipse glasses to students at the start of third period. It was definitely a cool experience, junior Jacob Piehl said. It was crazy seeing how quickly the moon came over the sun and how dark everything was. Seen in the photo, starting at the yellow shirt and working clockwise, are juniors Annabelle Nugent, Erica Smith, Savannah Westwick, Sarah Goddard, Lauren Owen, Jacob Piehl and Avery Parker.

Riley McConnell, Chief Operating Officer
Riley McConnell is a senior at Prosper High School and is the Chief Operating Officer for Eagle Nation Online. This is her third year on staff and is involved in the Football Operations Department, an organization she is a founding member of. She is also the head photographer for the school's baseball team, alongside pursuing her personal photography career.

Kaya Miller, Co-Editor-in-Chief
Kaya Miller, originally from Los Angeles, California, moved to Prosper, Texas in 2017. She attends Prosper High School as a senior. This is her third year on staff, and she is co-editor-in-chief of Eagle Nation Online and editor-in-chief of the print newspaper Eagle Nation Times. Miller is on the Prosper debate team as historian. She is also president of the Spanish Honor Society. Miller is also on the Dallas Rowing Club Juniors team. In her free time, she enjoys baking and playing guitar.
