From his homemade studio in his bedroom, one Prosper High School student has brought many characters to life with his voice, after just seven months of voice acting.
“Usually, I will have everything set up, and I’ll have a script for a set date,” senior Christian Alfano said. “Everyone is supposed to submit their scripts at a certain point, and we get casted through a website that connects us with directors and various projects.”
Christian’s dad, Robert Alfano, had concerns in the beginning because in a field like entertainment, the competition never ends. However, Christian’s passion for his talent has driven him to success.
“I think I’m really proud of his grit, the ability to just keep going even though in the beginning things weren’t easy,” Alfano said. “Even as an adult that’s a really important trait to have because if you really want something, you have to keep doing it no matter what, even if you fail 100 times.”
From participating in theater to taking lessons from a voice coach, Christian quickly became committed to acting. However, he understood he would face adversity.
“The biggest challenge is not comparing yourself to others, and other people’s journeys through voice acting,” Christian said. “Since everyone’s voice is different, everyone can portray different types of voices.”
Christian finds casting calls through a website weekly, and calls with his voice coach monthly to improve how he presents his characters.
“Not everyone dives immediately into a professional,” Christian said. “Some people just do it for amateurs, and some people get really lucky and are able to join an agency really quick right off the bat.”
Christians’s projects lean toward anime and video game-based productions – where he fell in love with this unique style of acting.
“I can see myself doing a lot of character voices for a living, and I really hope that this works out for me,” Christian said. “I hope I can be an inspiration to other people who enjoy the same things that I do.”
In a niche like acting, Christian said no set path on how to succeed exists, but he has followed where his talents have taken him, to make connections with his peers and directors – and grow as a voice actor.
“I personally believe that if you have the drive and the passion to do what you love,” he said. “You can do anything.”
