Lauren Clayton is a senior at Prosper High School, fulfilling her second year as a member of the Eagle Nation Online staff. She is a reporter with a passion for environmental and mental health stories. Outside of school she enjoys writing fantasy, drawing, and caring for her pet uromastyx. After graduating she plans to attend UT Arlington and pursue a degree in Herpetology.

At the annual Out of Darkness Walk on Nov. 4, Jerry Craven, Nate Craven, and Rebecca Craven hold a poster, created by the Rushing cheer team to honor their son, Isaac Craven. The 'new-to-PISD' table, located toward the front of the lunchroom, seats four students. On the table is a set of cards with questions that help new students get to know each other. "I remember what it was like to be a new student with no friends to sit with at lunch," junior Sarah Goddard said. "For the first quarter of my freshman year, I sat alone. It’s pretty easy to find the kids who have nobody to sit with — the ones on their phones, aren’t talking to others — and so I just sat with them. Going to a new school is hard for anybody."

According to Clayton, this specific symbol of the season reflects the memory of a lost loved one, and joins one of the many made to hang on the Hope Tree. "I have tons of different colors of ribbon," Clayton said. "Students can select ribbons that represent different emotions that you feel when you think about that person. Some common emotions that people select include love, loneliness, anger, sadness, frustration, hope, encouragement, inspiration and peace."

Lauren Clayton, a junior at Prosper High school stands in front of a Hope Squad banner. She advocates for mental health and suicide prevention by raising money and joining in the Prosper "Out of Darkness" walk. The Prosper Out of the Darkness walk will take place on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 5, in Windsong Ranch. Registration and T-shirt pickup will start at 8:30 in the morning, and the walk kick-off will start at 10 a.m. "I will be joining hundreds of thousands of people across the country who are walking in the "Out of the Darkness" walks to prevent suicide and to support AFSP's mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide," Clayton said. "It's a worthy cause, and one deserving of support from our community."

The above graphic made using Canva illustrates the negative drawbacks of aiding the spread of zebra mussels. Zebra mussels are an invasive species that are endangering North Texas's bodies of water. Zebra mussels are what scientists call "filter feeders," a species that feeds off of microscopic animals and plants called plankton. At first, a natural filtering system seems like it would benefit the local habitat, but when you put into perspective that many other native organisms also consume plankton, this trait becomes concerning.

Many reptiles see Prosper as their ideal home. One of the most common reptiles seen within the area is the Mediterranean house gecko. This lizard, interestingly enough, was first spotted in Florida before spreading all across the southern coast of the United States. Eventually, it made its way westwards to North Texas.
