With flashcards scattered across desks and conversations filling the classroom, social studies UIL members dive deeply into history, learning about everything associated with this year’s theme of the early American republic and the pivotal election of 1800’s.
Most recently, they put their knowledge to the test at the district competition where the team secured a victory after meticulous preparation and countless practice questions.
“My students study so much, they become experts beyond what even I know,” Cummings said. “They take the information and resources and run with it. This is a superb team, one of the hardest-working groups I’ve coached.”
More than anything, the members said they believe that their collaborative efforts brought them to success.
“My favorite part about social studies UIL is the collaboration,” sophomore Vishal Hemachandran said. “We organize study sessions even when Mrs. Cummings isn’t available, meeting at coffee shops.”
Winning district was a memorable moment for the team, one that seemed to be a great surprise.
“When I heard the results, I immediately went online to check,” sophomore Harsh Singh said. “I was really surprised and proud of our team’s achievement. Seeing our efforts rewarded was an amazing feeling.”
Looking ahead, the team now shifts its focus towards preparing for the regional competition, carrying forward the momentum and standards set by Cummings.
“Our team thrives because we work together, learn continuously, and genuinely enjoy what we do,” Cummings said. “Winning is great, but the most important part is the journey itself and the growth that happens along the way.”
This was a lesson that members said they found through competition.
“UIL has taught me how to think critically, work well with others and manage my time effectively,” Hemachandran said. “These skills are valuable not just in competition, but also in everyday life.”
This serves as one of the last lessons to be taught by Coach Cummings as she moves to Richland High School next year – creating uncertainty among students as to who will take over the position as social studies coach.
“Mrs. Cummings plays a huge role in our achievements,” sophomore Suhani Singh said. “She always helps us develop strong strategies and encourages us to look at history from different viewpoints. Her leaving could greatly impact our team, depending on who our new coach is.”
Cummings recognizes that her absence will greatly impact the team. She is actively seeking a replacement who can guide the team with the same energy and care.
“I want to find a coach who really loves learning and can understand the importance of teamwork and competition,” Cummings said. “This is a strong team that’s ready to succeed. They just need the right person to guide them.”
If the team succeeds at regionals they will advance to the state competition – an opportunity they’re working hard to earn.
“They know that I’m leaving for Richland next year, so they’re working hard to go and try their best to win state,” Cummings said. “They’re the best team I’ve coached. I believe they can truly win state.”
