Before the pep rally starts, Principal Nicholas Jones stands on the Arena floor. The pep rally began at 11:49 a.m. “I love the alma mater and the fight song,” Jones said. “It’s my favorite part of the pep rally every time.” (Jake Radcliffe)
Arms up high, students sing the PHS alma mater. The aloha-themed pep rally took place Aug. 23 in the Arena. Instead of having the usual study hall during advisory, students instead went to the pep rally, but no one had to attend. The administration has made attendance optional. (Emily Logan)
While the “Sofia the First” theme song plays, senior Kinley Jackson sings along and dances with school mascot Edgy the Eagle. Music played as students filed into the Arena. “My favorite part of the pep rally is just being out there and cheering with everybody,” Jackson said. “I love seeing everybody so hype and having fun.” (Jake Radcliffe)
As the color guard performs its routine, junior spirit leader Nathanial Crabtree claps to encourage the audience. The spirit leaders usually only have a week before the pep rally to officially decide what they want to do at the event. “We figured out Tuesday what we’re running through, and then Thursday, we met up for advisory and switched it up,” Crabtree said. “We had lots of last minute changes.” (Jake Radcliffe)
In the air, junior Talyah Williams poses in her stunt. The cheerleaders performed multiple routines throughout the first pep rally of the year. “For the pep rallies, we start about a week to two weeks early, beginning with the routine, and then we do it section by section,” assistant cheer coach Kirsten Crawford said. “Sometimes, we’ll start with the pyramid, then the tumbling line, then the dance, and then we’ll switch it up. At the end, we put it all together, and then they have to do it three times perfectly in a row.” (Emily Logan)
Arms held together, freshmen participate in the hula hoop relay. For this game, students from each class competed against each other and had to move a hula hoop along the line of people without separating. The seniors won this competition. (Emily Logan)
To win the pep rally game, senior Tayvin Labbe jumps onto senior Logan Cahill’s lap to pop a balloon. Both play for the varsity football team and will compete in their first match against Westlake High School at Baylor’s McLane Stadium in Waco at 7 p.m. “I’m most excited to play Westlake,” Labbe said. “The first game of the season is definitely going to be the hardest. It’s exciting to start fresh and hit them out.” (Jake Radcliffe)
Hand in the air, senior Evan Creasy sings the school’s alma mater. Creasy is a member of student council. “I love how it gives everybody a chance to get into the school spirit,” Creasy said. “It creates a great atmosphere.” (Jake Radcliffe)
As sports teams are announced, junior Kushal Kathuria, senior Sanjay Rajjan, junior Karun Revankar and freshman Brady Hobbs walk into the Arena. Kathuria serves as captain of the varsity boys tennis team. The varsity tennis team played its first game on Tuesday against Rock Hill at the PHS tennis courts and won 14-5. (Jake Radcliffe)
While the alma mater plays, junior spirit leader Daniella Espinoza waves the football team’s “The Ship” flag. The pep rally ended at 12:31 p.m. “I really liked how hype it was,” Espinoza said. “Everyone was involved. Everyone was talking or screaming, and it was really good energy all around.” (Jake Radcliffe)
