Because of the increase in population, the Prosper ISD Board of Trustees voted Aug. 21 to place a bond referendum with the arrangement of four propositions on the impending ballot in November. The propositions total $2,807,000,000.
“Every time that we have done a bond here in Prosper, its been a big number,” Board of Trustees President Bill Beavers said. “We’ve seen the back end of that – in hindsight in 2020 – being the right call.”
The propositions highlights four featured plans. The segments can be viewed here.
- Proposition A involves modernizing older schools and the administration building in PISD — update and expand. Safety and security measures will be reinforced, providing transportation systems, and buying land for two new middle schools and six new elementary schools.
- Proposition B involves upgrading technology for students, faculty and staff.
- Proposition C will expand and improve athletic facilities and includes a new 8,000-seat stadium as well as new turf and track for existing ones.
- Proposition D will provide a performing arts center for dance, theater, music and visual programs.
“The performing arts center was truly needed, as we saw in the presentation,” board member Tommy Van Wolfe said. “Folks need to understand the decision we make tonight would be to simply put it it on a ballot and give the voters the opportunity to make that decision.”
Early voting will take place on Oct. 23 through Nov. 3 and Election Day will be Nov. 7, 2023, and Junior Class President Neil Katta said he believes, at least, Proposition A should be approved.
“I believe that Prosper should be given funds to upgrade our facilities,” Katta said. “Prosper may be the oldest school, but that doesn’t mean we have to be outdated. Our students here have just as much to offer here as at our other newer schools and it’s our responsibility as a school district to give our students the opportunity to achieve their full potential, and that also means having the best equipment and facilities.”
