As the district hosted the Texas 6A State Duals on Saturday, Jan. 22, the girls varsity team placed second in the Gold Bracket, and the boys varsity team placed second in the Green Pool. Now, the teams prepare to compete against Rockwall Tuesday, Jan. 25 at home.
The teams are led by head coach Sion King and assistant coach Tony Cooper.
So far, both teams have had a great season with multiple team and individual placings, and they continued the pattern this weekend.
At the State Duals, Weatherford High School and Austin Vandegrift High School both beat the boys team which pushed them from the Gold Bracket into the Green Pool. The team then competed against New Braunfels who beat them 42-33. The team had a total of 10 pins with a total time of 18:57. They won 92 team points and 113 match points.
The top players of the team were sophomore Samuel Iturrino and sophomore Joseph Richardson who both had 18 team points, as well as junior Mason Gordon. Gordon earned the highest amount of points in one match on the team with 13 match points, and he had 34 total match points. Iturrino came right behind him with 12 points in one match. Iturrino, Richardson, Gordon and freshman Aaron Martinez all were undefeated in the tournament.
The girls team placed second overall in the top bracket to Euless Trinity after losing to them 33-24 in the finals – with the Lady Eagles winning four matches, and Euless Trinity winning six. Prosper girls beat Weatherford 27-18 in the quarterfinals and then defeated Cypress Ranch – who placed third overall – 30-24 in the semifinals.
The girls team had 11 pins with a total time of 24:56, placing fourth overall for most pins in the least time. They had 81 team points and 84 total match points.
Senior Taylor Martinez and junior Ashley Vogelpohl stood out for their performance in the tournament.
Martinez won all of her matches with three pins in a total time of 4:32 – placing third overall for most pins in the least time. She tied for fifth overall for most points in one match with 10 points. She also had the second-most total match points overall at 24.
Martinez has been a stand-out all year, coming out as the champion four different times in the 71-team Cy Fair Invitation, Texas Outlaw, 2021 Texas Women’s Classic and the Red River All-Star Duel. Last year, she placed second in the 6A state championship for her weight bracket. Martinez’s performance in this tournament fits right in with her work all year.
Vogelpohl also won all of her matches, with three pins and a total time of 7:46. She had the most total match points overall at 30 points, and she placed sixth overall for fastest fall with a pin time of 0:32.
This season Vogelpohl has placed fifth in the Texas Outlaw, third in the Eagle Nest invitational, and second in the Cavalier Clash, making this tournament one of her best performances of the year. Last year, she placed third in the state championships for her 16U weight bracket.
The girls team will compete against Rockwall – who placed sixth in this tournament – in their next meet. Rockwall lost to Cypress Ranch 33-24 – who the Lady Eagles beat 30-24. Both Rockwall and Prosper had 11 pins, while Rockwall had a slightly lower total time. Rockwall had more team points at 123, but the Lady Eagles had more match points at 84 – as compared to Rockwall’s 52. With these statistics, the Prosper girls could pull out a win against Rockwall.
