As we were walking outside to evacuate for the monthly fire drill, I learned about an unpopular rule in the dress code.

I wrapped a snowflake blanket around my shoulders are prepared for the cold. I enjoyed the warmth for about ten seconds, but the look of content on my face disappeared when I was informed that blankets are against dress code.

“The main reason we have blankets against the dress code is because it impedes us from seeing what you’re wearing underneath there,” Assistant Principal, Mrs. Winter said. “You could be out of dress code or wearing inappropriate things.”

During passing periods, I see swarms of people in all grades with blankets wrapped around their bodies. But never once did I consider how dangerous this trend could be.

“It’s possible that someone could hide a weapon or something else capable of harming people under there,” Mrs. Winter said. “It also allows you to hide with other people sometimes, you know?”

As a student in the Prosper district, I have to admit that I never considered these possibilities; however, these situations aren’t appropriate at school and violate many of the regulations.

”I used to think it was a really stupid rule,” sophomore Macy Graham said. “I didn’t understand why it was such a big problem.”

After having the rule explained though, people start to understand why the rule is in place.

”I do understand that inappropriate things can go on now,” Graham said.  “I still think it’s unfair, but I do understand the reasoning behind it.”

Even though many individuals do not agree with the rule, it has to be respected. However, there are ways to cope with the cold temperatures during winter.

“We understand that girls get cold, and I’ve suggested that the classes they’re cold in, they ask the teacher if they can put a blanket in there,” Mrs. Winter said. “Most of the teachers have been pretty receptive to that, so there is a way around it.

Looks like several people including myself will have to take this helpful tip into consideration this chilly winter season.
