Averie Grace Benson
Cosette
Is this your first production with the department?
I’ve been doing theatre for about 10 years, but Les Mis will be my second musical with Prosper Theatre.
How do you feel about the upcoming show?
I’m so excited for everyone to come and see it! Playing this character has been such a dream, and I think that the story we’re telling is one of great importance, especially for the time we live in now.
Can you describe your character?
Cosette is the orphaned daughter of Fantine, who was sent to live with the Thénardiers before she was rescued by Val Jean. She had a very dark and abusive childhood, and when we meet her towards the end of Act One we get to see the person she’s become because of her childhood, and I think it’s really interesting to portray that.
What are the types of things that you have been working on in rehearsals?
I’ve been working on developing my characterization because so many times I’ve seen the character of Cosette played two-dimensionally and I wanted to make sure that I could change that and let people see what a truly tragic character she is. I’ve also been going over my songs with my scene partners!
I’m excited for people to see how hard we’ve been working on putting this show together, and for them to fall in love with the characters as we all have.
Why should people come see this show?
Les Mis is a story about love, redemption and forgiveness and I think that it’s a story that everyone needs in their life, especially in the things we are facing today as a society. I cannot wait for people to see the work we’ve put into this show.
