Student working to earn Gold Award

Earning a Gold Award is the highest honour in Girl Scouts. A scout has to earn her Bronze and Silver Award before she can earn her Gold. Claire Humpherys, a sophomore, has earned both her Bronze and Silver and has started working on her Gold.

“I decided to try and earn my gold award because I wanted to help people and be able to serve to better my community,” Humphreys said, “as well as the opportunities it presents in my future.”

To earn her Gold, she has to identify an issue and do something to create a change.

“I have been recently interested in bees and how they are slowly going extinct,” Humphreys said. “They provide pollen for the community and help other plants grow.”

She plans to reach out to the Heard Museum.

“It’s a museum with interactive features where people can go to learn more about animals and nature,” Humphreys said. “I will provide an interactive piece to educate the masses on bees.”

Although she has not decided what her piece is going to look like, she plans to make it out of wood.

“I hope to educate the community about the issue of the bees,” Humphreys said. “Saving bees will help with the environmental issues, such as plant growth.”
