Early spring brings track season back into play. Thursday, Feb. 8 marked the beginning of the track season as they competed in a practice tri-meet against McKinney North and Frisco Liberty on North’s turf.

“The goal was to see everyone compete after weeks of training,” Coach Lopez, the male and female relay coach, said. “We had a great practice meet and many athletes stood out with great performances.”

Here is a list of the events that took place:
Field Events: shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, pole vault
Running Events: 3200m run, 4x100m relay, 800m run, 100/110m hurdles (first 5 hurdles only), 100m dash, 4×200 m relay (no blocks), 400 m dash (no blocks), 300m hurdles (first 5 hurdles only), 200m dash, 1600m run, 4x400m relay (no blocks)

The athletes were there for over four hours in temperatures as low as 24°. To stay warm, the athletes covered themselves in blankets and cold-weather gear.

Tate Nichols, who participates in the 200 meter dash, the 300 meter hurdles, and the 110 meter hurdles, believes it is important to stay warm before your event. “You need to perform to the best of your ability,” Nichols said. “To keep warm, I usually go through the football warm ups or the warm ups we train for during track.”

The next meet, Nolan Viking Relays, takes place Friday, Feb. 16 at 12:00 p.m. at Doskocil Stadium in Ft. Worth.
