Book Summary

The Sun and Her Flowers is a poetry book divided into five chapters that depict different periods throughout the author’s life from her first publication, Milk and Honey. The book’s chapters flow in this order: “Wilting,” “Falling, “Rooting,” “Rising” and “Blooming.” Each chapter symbolizes writer Rupi Kaur’s journey from tragedy to success.

Personal Opinion

The Sun and Her Flowers, a book filled with unique poetry, shows Kaur’s roots as an “Instapoet.” Instapoetry is a subset of poetry where poets share their work on Instagram. Authored and illustrated by Rupi Kaur, every one of the poems and their subsequent illustrations hold a piece of the author for the reader to enjoy.

The Sun and Her Flowers was the first poetry book I’ve read in full. I was browsing through the poetry section of Barnes and Noble on a day off when I came across a beautiful yellow cover of a special edition of the second poetry book published by Kaur. I had never read a poetry book before, and I wanted to see what the hype was behind them, and I can confidently say that I understand now.

The power of poetry to connect with a reader is immense. In this book, Kaur beautifully weaves personal advice and trauma together to create elegantly written poems that speak to the soul. Kaur presents the unique ability to write about something for herself, and have it relate with many others. This book provides a quick read and features poetry for every kind of mood, good or bad. Throughout this trying time, I heavily suggest reading the uplifting poems that populate the chapters “Rising” and “Blooming” to help boost your mood.
