Book Summary

Summer Robinson lives a normal, happy life. She has a boyfriend who she adores, parents who care about her and a supportive group of friends. She has her life planned out. Summer knows what she wants to do, who she wants to be and who she wants to be with. But in one night, her life will change forever.

While on her way to the park, Summer is kidnapped and taken to a cellar. There, she finds three other girls named Poppy, Rose and Violet. All named after flowers.

Their kidnapper, Colin, is a thirty year old man who suffers from schizophrenia and uses these girls to make a perfect family. He dresses them, feeds them, entertains them and in return he just wants them to be his perfect, pure flowers.

Summer needs to find a way out, but she is on her own. Poppy, Rose and Violet are starting to believe they are part of Colin’s family. Time is running out for Summer before she also becomes too psychologically damaged to escape. She needs to find a way to fight back and survive.

But flowers do not last long in a cellar without sunlight.

Personal Opinion

Are you looking for a suspenseful book to read? If so, The Cellar is beyond creepy. It is a perfect book to read around the Halloween or fall time, and it kept me entertained from the first to last page.

The plot seems basic with the whole “girl getting stolen by a guy in a white van,” but I think the simple story line is what made it even more realistic and creepy.

Summer Robinson was a great main character because her thoughts and feelings were relatable. She was a fighter and knew she had to do everything in her power to get out of the cellar. Poppy, Rose and Violet were interesting characters to read about because their stories were unique. Rose and Violet had been living with Colin for months and Poppy had been there for years. They were all mentally out of place which made Summer’s escape even more difficult.

This book is a quick easy read, so if you want to read a thriller but do not want something as in depth as a Stephen King novel, then The Cellar would be a great option.
