The 67th Grammys took place Feb. 2. Hosted by five–time consecutive host Trevor Noah at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the Grammy Awards featured a combination of performances, awards and speeches.
With the 15.4 million people that tuned in to watch the Grammys, everyone is bound to have different opinions about the show – whether they’re happy about the winners or believe that an artist who wasn’t nominated should have been.
I myself have my own opinions on the latest Grammy Awards – including my perspective of the winners, the awards, the performances, and other nominees.
Winners
There were 94 awards given to nominees. Out of these contenders, some of the arguably most significant were Beyonce winning Album of the Year with her first country album “Cowboy Carter,” “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar winning Record of the Year and Song of the Year, Chappell Roan becoming first-time Grammy winner as Best New Artist, Doechii being the third woman to win Best Rap Album for “Alligator Bites Never Heal” and Sabrina Carpenter winning with “Short n’ Sweet” as the Best Pop Vocal Album.
Audiences were overjoyed with many of the results. I was incredibly excited when Doechii, Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter won, as it was all their first Grammy nominations, and becoming a first-time Grammy winner is a big deal. Previously, I hadn’t heard much about Doechii, but, after she won her category, I started to listen to her music. That’s what I loved about the Grammys — I love getting exposed to artists I may not have listened to before.
However, one category winner stuck out to me: Beyonce winning Best Country Album for “Cowboy Carter,” a surprise to many people. While I do think Beyonce deserved the Best Album of the Year award, I think “Cowboy Carter” is less fit for the Best Country Album award. Even if the album is considered country, the music lacks the sound a usual country album would. Personally, I don’t listen to country, but I’ve lived in Texas for long enough to know what the genre typically sounds like. Additionally, Beyonce said it isn’t a country album but a “Beyonce album.”
However, I don’t think her achievement should be dismissed. It’s evident that a lot of effort went into the album, and people shouldn’t bash her for winning a category she can’t control.
I was especially surprised and happy when Chappell Roan won Best New Artist. Her style of music is refreshing and fun, and the persona of Chappell Roan is something I haven’t seen in the media for a while. Roan brings a sense of excitement into the music industry, and I’m eager to see the new music she’ll be releasing in the upcoming future.
Overall, all of the winners at the 67th Grammy Awards were deserving of their achievements and should be celebrated for their awards.
Notable nominees
Some artists did not won any awards among the nominees but should still be recognized.
In this year’s Grammys, there were definitely a few surprises. For example, Billie Eilish was nominated seven times but won no awards. This surprised many people, as her album has garnered over 5 billion streams on Spotify and counting. I really loved her album “Hit Me Hard and Soft.” I was surprised that she didn’t win a Grammy this time, but the competition was especially fierce this year.
Another surprise was that Taylor Swift didn’t win any awards either. Taylor is known to sweep the Grammy Awards, and she recently became the artist to have the most Grammy wins for album of the year with four wins. I initially thought she would win Album of the Year with “The Tortured Poets Department,” but I was proven wrong. However, I don’t believe that her loss is the worst thing in the world – I think it’s a good thing that other artists were given the chance to win Album of the Year. That doesn’t diminish her accomplishments, but it lets other artists who hadn’t won before have the opportunity to celebrate their own.
Additionally, Post Malone was nominated twice for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “I Had Some Help,” a collaboration with Morgan Wallen, and “Fortnight” with Taylor Swift. Beyonce and Miley Cyrus won the award for their song “II Most Wanted.” This surprised me, as both of Post Malone’s songs went viral on social media apps and the radio, and I hadn’t heard of the collaboration song between Beyonce and Miley Cyrus until today.
All the winners were deserving in their achievements, but the losing nominees worked just as hard. I look forward to seeing the artists who didn’t manage to secure a Grammy this year potentially win in the foreseeable future – whether it’s for Album of the Year, Song of the Year or Best New Artist.
Fewer awards, more performances
Out of all 94 categories, only nine awards were televised throughout the three hours the show aired. To me, this is odd – categories such as Best Rap Song won by Kendrick Lamar for “Not Like Us,” and Best Dance Pop Recording won by Charli xcx for “Von dutch” weren’t televised, even though many people were excited to see who would win these categories.
This year’s award show was more performance-heavy, with Chappell Roan, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and dozens of other artists performing. Many of these performances were very impressive, with my favorite being Sabrina Carpenter’s – I loved the theatrics of the beginning, and listening to “Espresso” never fails to brighten my mood. However, my favorite vocals of the night definitely belonged to Chappell Roan – I loved the emotions she expressed vocally during her performance of “Pink Pony Club,” and I hope that she’ll be nominated again in the future.
In all, I enjoyed the performances, but I wish that there could have been more awards and less entertainment – the Grammys are called an award show, not a performance show. Despite this, I had a lovely time watching the artists, and I think they all did an amazing job with their performances.
In conclusion
The 67th Grammy Awards was high in viewings but low in the amount of awards televised. Many artists who won a Grammy were a surprise to viewers and myself, and there were a few nominees who should have been recognized at the show, whether with an award, a nomination or a performance. But, at the end of the day, I’m happy that I got the chance to watch the award show, and I look forward to the 68th Grammy Awards that will take place next year.
