Artificial Intelligence involves the science of inventing and programming machines with human intelligence. With AI progressing throughout the years, it’s become more available for use – even at school.
Artificial intelligence can provide a beneficial asset for students and teachers in a learning environment.
Teachers use AI to create more of a unique learning experience for their students. AI allows teachers to think outside the box, and make their teaching style more creative and interesting. Teachers can make their lesson plans more distinctive and give the students different perspectives of what they are learning. This tool can be used to help target specific student learning styles, which could help learners grasp a better understanding of their topic, and show more growth in their classes.
In addition, as students get a better understanding of their topics, AI tools can be used to increase their participation in the classroom. Students feel more comfortable and confident when they feel like they have deeper knowledge of that topic. However, when used in the wrong ways and/or with the wrong motives, students can be punished under plagiarism rules. For example, if they use AI to write their paper in order to cheat on an assignment, no one benefits. But, if students use an AI tool to help them become a better editor or to discover new topics via pre-writing activities, then the final (original) piece could be better than ever.
AI such as Chat GPT, makes it easier for students to research and gather information. Students often spend the majority of their time trying to find relevant information for their topic. However, AI generates factual information within seconds and saves time for students to focus on the important part of a task.
However, AI tools are still developing, and it’s always important to fact check information provided by AI. Additionally, AI may not be able to give accurate information on current events, as these tools can only generate information that is included in the data they are fed. For example, the free version of Chat GPT, GPT 3.5 only has knowledge of events before January 2022.
Due to a risk of students cheating and plagiarizing, people have become opposed to having AI open in a learning environment. While this is a legitimate concern, AI continues to prove over and over again that it can have a positive impact when used in a proper manner. For example, students can use AI to receive advice on editing to improve the grammatical quality of their writing before a deadline.
When allowed, artificial intelligence continues to be a beneficial asset for the classroom environment because it gives more time for students to focus on creative and new ideas once they know what the research holds on topics.
Students and teachers should incorporate AI into their learning environment because it engages creativity, provides interaction, and saves time. Resources such as AI may seem unnecessary, however, they can make an enormous positive impact on the growth of both students and their instructors.
