Review: ‘The Inheritance Games’ excites readers with mystery

‘The Inheritance Games’ by Jennifer Lynn Barnes brings mystery, riddles, and and wealth into young Avery’s life. This book can be found at your local library and on Amazon. “Books that contain riddles and clues have never been my favorite,” senior and opinion editor Maya Contreras said. “So, discovering this book was amazing.”

Summary

Avery has one goal in life: get out of town. She plans on winning a scholarship to attend school, but instead discovers an inheritance from the recently deceased Tobias Hawthorne. He left his entire fortune to Avery, but she has never met him before.

In order to get her inheritance, Avery has to stay at the Hawthorne house – each room filled with puzzles, secret doors and riddles that hold everything Tobias Hawthorne stood for. The only catch: Avery has to live with the four brothers whom he left behind with no inheritance. Filled with rage, the brothers work to try and solve this mystery and find out who Avery is.

The two main brothers, Grayson and Jameson, are determined to solve it first and take the inheritance for themselves. But, as they get closer to Avery, they can’t help but want more. Grayson thinks that Avery stole the money from their grandfather. Jameson is convinced that Avery is his grandfather’s way of leaving one last riddle behind, and she is the key to everything.

My opinion

“The Inheritance Games” is an adventure and mystery novel, a genre out of my comfort zone. Most of the books I read have been rom-coms and fiction, so it was good to branch out. This book is a three part series all revolving around the same characters.

I did not like the love triangle relationship between Avery and the brothers. Avery remains focused on solving this puzzle but gets interrupted every time they are in the way. This book could have been so much better with an independent main character – or just one love interest.

The best part of this book was the short chapters. Books with chapters like this make it convenient to read. I found this book to be an easy read that can be completed fast.

I am excited to read the next book in the series, which answers the question of why Hawthorne chose Avery to receive this inheritance. Jennifer Lynn Barnes has easily become one of my favorite mystery authors. Her books contain many riddles that leave the reader wanting to keep reading.
