Sophomore Carmen Mijares started the Catholic club and wants to connect with other Catholic students.

“I decided to start the club because I thought it was a fun way to get all of the Catholic people around the school involved in something in school, like spiritually and stuff,” Carmen Mijares said. “There were already some different types of Christian clubs, so I thought it would be really interesting to get a catholic club started and get friendships going.”

The officers have already been elected for the club.

“I’m the president, the vice president is Bethany Lam, the secretary is Sofi Mijares, and the historian is Serena Lam,” Carmen said.

The club follows four “S’s.” The first is “social,” the second is “spiritual,” the third is “service,” and the fourth is “saints.”

“We have a plan, so we have 4 ‘S’s,” Carmen said. “We want everyone to feel loved by God, and to interact with other people that have the same beliefs.”

Every meeting is based on one of the “S’s,” and the activities in the meeting pertain to that “S.”

“The first one we did was we wrote letters to the lunch ladies and custodians for Christmas [for social],” Carmen said. “This time since it’s spiritual, the second ‘S,’ we are praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet, which is like a shorter version of the Rosary. You still pray with the Rosary.”

Meetings start by having everyone sign in and grab some food, and then they do an icebreaker.

“Then we have a presentation explaining what we’re going to do and like background information and everything,” Carmen said. “Then we do what we’re going to do, like this time we’re praying; last time we were doing an actual activity; but we always start and close in prayer.”

There are no fees or requirements to join, and the club is open to everyone, although it is targeted towards Catholics.

“I feel like it’s important for Catholics to have friends that are of their same faith and religion because sometimes when you’re dealing with a lot of stuff in school, especially for high schoolers, it’s easier to solve your problems and lean on people who have your same beliefs,” Carmen said.

Meetings are the first Thursday of every month in room 1225. Ms. Ewing is the staff advisor for the club. The next meeting is February 8.

“I like how all the people get really happy about it and really encouraged to come to the next meeting, and it’s just so much fun and I enjoy it very much to see everyone joining together like our goal is,” Carmen said.
