For his 18th birthday, junior Will Ligon goes skydiving with employees of Skydive Spaceland Dallas in Whitewrite. The descent began at 14,000 feet in the air. I cant believe I just did that, Ligon said. I was in shock the whole way down.

Ames is committed to University of Texas at Austin. As the girls varsity team comes together, seniors Carly Garner and Jaeda Crabtree receive their certificates for the 2023-2024 season. The team came second in the district. Crabtree had 72 goals this season.

Walnut Grove High School hosted a UIL academic learning day on Oct. 21. Students from all around the state came to gain more knowledge and experience about the types of events they will be competing in this year. Students will compete in practice events before districts in April.

Sitting at his desk, biology teacher Matthew Nicholls prepares the lesson plan for his next class. Nicholls was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes a few years ago. “It’s not something people need to feel ashamed about,” Nicholls said, “it’s just a part of who you are. It can definitely be frustrating at times, but it can teach you so many things as well.”

At the annual Out of Darkness Walk on Nov. 4, Jerry Craven, Nate Craven, and Rebecca Craven hold a poster, created by the Rushing cheer team to honor their son, Isaac Craven. The Texas legislature passed a new bill - Bill 900, regarding new guidelines for books in school libraries. The guidelines state that book vendors will have to rate their books based on how explicit the vendors perceive the book to be. Schools in Texas have begun to implement the new bill according to Texas Education Agency guidelines.

Prosper will be one of several municipalities hosting mandatory –state training exercises. The safety practice will be held at Prospers Childrens Health Stadium. This event will give not only safety officials in area practice, but student journalists from all three district high schools also received invitations to participate in a press conference about the event. This will provide students with an opportunity to participate in a mock press conference, Hamlin said. With several people from different law enforcement divisions — the press conference is going to be in response to the events happening that day.

In the PHS gym, senior Courtney Reed gets ready to donate blood. Carter Blood Care works with the HOSA organization to host a blood drive for students today, Nov. 27. Seniors can get an honor cord for graduation if they donate twice – once in the first semester and once in the second semester. There will be another opportunity for 16-year-olds (with a parent-signed form) and 17-year-olds (and older) to donate in the spring. Every blood drive we do saves so many lives, HOSA sponsor and health sciences teacher Kelli Factor said. As you know, there is a massive shortage of blood available, so this really does make a difference for our community. Every pint collected can save up to three lives.

The team will compete in the first round of the state championship tournament on Friday Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. With a win, the team will advance to the championship on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 5 p.m. in the same location.

Watching my grandma leave this earth was a learning lesson – to make sure my family and I hold each other accountable to be able to watch each other grow, Cruz said. Ever since February, my approach with family has been more grateful than ever.
